Multiverse® Transmitter

City Theatrical's Multiverse® Transmitter opens a new world in wireless DMX/RDM. Its Ethernet input allows it to take in Streaming ACN (sACN) or Art-Net and to transmit between eight and 10 user-selectable universes of DMX/RDM, depending on the type of Multiverse Transmitter product used, with the ability to use less radio energy than a present day single universe wireless DMX transmitter.

The Multiverse Transmitter has a Bluetooth radio receiver built in that allows it to communicate with City Theatrical’s DMXcat® app from the user’s smartphone. This gives the user smartphone control of any lighting fixture that is part of the Multiverse setup, whether it is a lighting fixture with a Multiverse Module inside, a lighting fixture receiving its data from a Multiverse SHoW Baby or Multiverse Node, or any wired fixture downstream of those devices. 

The Multiverse Transmitter is Wi-Fi enabled, allowing for communication and control from tablet based Wi-Fi lighting controllers like Luminair.

pdf ETC Mosaic System and Multiverse wireless DMX for Fiber Sculpture in Columbus, Ohio

“Current,” a fiber sculpture by artist Janet Echelman, made its debut as a public art centerpiece in downtown Columbus, Ohio this fall. The sculpture is made up of 78 miles of twine that ripple in the breeze above a popular downtown intersection. It is illuminated by a mesmerizing nightly lighting program controlled by the ETC Mosaic system.

The lighting uses Multiverse wireless DMX/RDM technology to transmit and receive wireless DMX signals from across the street, over one hundred feet, as part of this outdoor installation. Discover more about lighting the sculpture in this ETC case study.

With red being the school color at the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia, ETC and Barbizon Lighting Company sought to upgrade the school's Marketing and Communications Studio with lighting that ranged to deep red hues using fos/4 Panel and Desire Fresnel lighting fixtures, which came equipped with City Theatrical’s onboard Multiverse wireless DMX/RDM technology. Once the UGA team found success with the new lighting system in the studio, they also performed a similar upgrade for Mahler Hall, a multi-function auditorium and meeting space on the same campus, in which the built-in Multiverse wireless DMX capability of the ETC fixtures offered savings in time and data cable costs for the university.

This case study Q&A explores the Multiverse® wireless DMX/RDM system used at Tesla’s Giga Texas “Cyber Rodeo” Grand Opening Party in Austin, Texas in April 2022, which celebrated the electric vehicle maker’s new $1.1 billion factory, and was attended by 15,000 guests. The dual band Multiverse 900MHz/ 2.4GHz solution used included one Multiverse Transmitter to broadcast nine universes of wireless DMX data out of the console and 10 long range Panel Antennas to transmit and receive 700 feet from the console over both the 2.4GHz and 900MHz bands.

Stranger Things is a TV Horror show with four seasons since it was first released on Netflix in 2016. The show is set in a small town that uncovers a mystery involving secret experiments and supernatural forces. Dual band Multiverse® Transmitter (P/N 5910) and Multiverse Node (P/N 5902) and 13 miniature QolorFLEX® 2x2.5A 900MHz Multiverse Dimmers (P/N 5917) were used during filming the most recent season four for their smooth wireless DMX dimming control and reliability on the 900MHz band. The dimmers were installed on bicycles and within flashlight props to drive 30W LEDs, which put out enough heat to melt plastic. pdf QolorFLEX and Multiverse at The Joyce Theater in NYC The Joyce Theater’s leadership was looking to update their theater’s lighting using LED tape to gain brightness, efficiencies, and a clean, modern look for their upcoming Fall 2021 season, which included an exciting lineup of dance performances following the closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic (and it was an ideal time since they also chose to replace all of their seats; a fresh look for the whole theater). They were looking for an LED tape solution to replace the fluorescent tubes that existed in the lobby coves, incandescent rope light in the coves under the loge seating areas, and many incandescent tube bulbs (40w) that were originally installed to light the fascia/facing within the theater. The ideal solution would even out the amount of light and color temperature in the theater, while also reducing the power consumption.

One Multiverse Transmitter 900MHz/2.4GHz unit was used for each zone, each used with a Panel Antenna. The lighting installation team set up multiple Multiverse Nodes, all with a Yagi antenna, within each zone for a total of 20 Nodes throughout the park. Using the 2.4GHz band, the Multiverse Transmitter is being used to broadcast two universes of wireless DMX data from above a small wall-mounted rack in the studio, which includes several ETC nodes, switches, and a power strip.
